Acupuncture Complements Chiropractic When It Comes to Natural Care

Many individuals dealing with chronic or acute pain, injury or illness have discovered that chiropractic care offers a drug-free, non-surgical way of overcoming their symptoms and improving their overall health. Even these patients, however, may not realize the value of other natural treatment modalities in enhancing these positive effects. Our doctors of chiropractic in Matawan, Dr. Bufano and Dr. Kazio, regularly prescribe such treatments as massage therapy, physical therapy laser therapy and nutritional supplementation. Another highly useful technique that we use in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments is acupuncture, administered by our staff acupuncturist Courtney Winter.

Acupuncture has served as a principal method of healing for thousands of years, originating in ancient China. These early practitioners believed that the flow of qi, or life energy, was responsible for the body's health, and that any interruption to the normal flow of this energy could create disease or pain. They devised a comprehensive "map" of the body displaying hundreds of points where the flow of qi could be diverted or corrected through the insertion of tiny, hair-thin needles. These points, known as meridians, continue to be used by acupuncturists to this day. Modern medicine tends to view acupuncture in terms of its effects on the central nervous system, which routes sensations and commands throughout the body in much the same way as the qi of the ancients. It is theorized that the technique stimulates the body's production of endorphins and opioids, natural substances that relieve pain. It also seems to influence electrical action in nerve cells by changing the calcium ion levels.

Acupuncture for Back Pain, Neck Pain Relief

Acupuncture's ability to manage pain and alter nerve function makes it an excellent complement to chiropractic adjustment, which corrects musculoskeletal alignment issues to relieve the nerve impingements that often impair the body's internal communications system. We can use these modalities together to treat chronic neck pain and back pain, control headaches, accelerate healing, and relieve swelling and inflammation. It is even useful as a preventative wellness technique for its ability to optimize the immune response and relax the body by relieving physical stress.

We will recommend this technique for individuals based on an initial evaluation of their medical history, reported symptoms, and other treatments that may also prove useful. A typical session on the table takes less than an hour, and patients typically feel no discomfort from the insertion of the needles. It is also quite safe, without the possible side effects or reactions that painkillers or other medications can cause, and without the recovery and expense issues associated with surgery. Several sessions may be necessary to get the full benefit of Courtney's work. We encourage anyone suffering from neck pain, back pain or other ailments to contact Old Bridge Spine and Wellness Center in Matawan, Freehold or Old Bridge, for a consultation.

ALLERGIES

With the amount of people suffering from allergies at an all-time high, many are seeking every avenue to minimize their symptoms. Spring time strikes fear into the eyes and noses of many allergy sufferers. Often they turn to medication which can mask their symptoms temporarily but does not heal the body. Acupuncture on the other hand, is able to address the root cause of your allergy symptoms.

Each patient is given an individual assessment to determine where their body may be deficient. Acupuncture treatment is then tailored to their individual make up to strengthen those deficiencies and resolve their allergy symptoms. Before long their sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose will only be a concern of the past. Patients will be able to enjoy each spring day with a clear mind and bright eyes.

ADDICTIONS

There are many kinds of addiction and none of them are easy. Whether it is gambling, smoking, drugs, alcohol or even food, addiction can have a negative impact on quality of life. With addiction there is both a physical and psychological dependence on a substance. The addicted person is unable to stop their behavior despite how it may negatively impact their life. Eventually they even build up a tolerance to the substance or behavior and need more of it to feel the same effect.

When an addict is unable to access their addiction of choice they go into withdrawal. Withdrawal, like addiction is both physiological and psychological. The symptoms of physical withdrawal depend on the substance but can include sweating, nausea, vomiting, etc. Psychological withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc.

The hardest part for an addict may just be getting through the symptoms of withdrawal without going back for a quick fix. That is where acupuncture comes in. Because acupuncture is able to naturally boost the level of endorphins in the body, the cravings and withdrawal symptoms are minimized.

In the 1970’s a treatment protocol was designed to treat addiction by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, NY. This protocol includes 5 auricular acupuncture points. Over the next few years it was studies alongside methodone to determine which was a more effective treatment for patients addicted to heroin. The NADA protocol was so effective that they stopped using methodone. Hundreds of patients were freed from their addiction with the use of acupuncture. Even our government has taken notice of the effectiveness of this treatment. It is now being used in Veteran’s Affairs Hospitals to treat not only addiction but also post traumatic stress disorder.

If you or someone you know is looking to beat addiction including smoking, our NADA trained acupuncturists would be happy to help them along their healing journey.

NECK PAIN

Suffering from neck pain can make many daily tasks impossible. Driving, working, reading all become stressful activities because of pain and limited range of motion. Pain killers and muscle relaxers can decrease pain but can also leave you foggy headed and unable to do everyday activities. Acupuncture can provide the pain relief you need without the fog you hate. Whether your neck pain is because of trauma or has slowly developed over the years, acupuncture is an effective way to relieve pain and restore movement.

When the body is healthy and pain free, Qi is said to move freely. When the free flow of Qi is disturbed, pain or illness occurs. Acupuncture works by stimulation points in order to restore the free flow of Qi and relieve pain. Acupuncture is also able to release endorphins which are naturally occurring chemicals in the body that help ease pain.

Acupuncture is even listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for neck pain. This means that acupuncture has been proven through controlled studies to effectively treat neck pain.

ANXIETY

Anxiety is a nervous disorder with feelings of worry or unease about future event with uncertain outcomes. These feelings of anxiety can manifest with very real, very physical symptoms such as: sweating, palpitations, shortness of breath, panic attacks, upset stomach, headaches, and insomnia. Along with the physical effects, anxiety sufferers can experience emotional effects such as depression and obsessive compulsive behaviors.

In Chinese Medicine, disorders like anxiety block the free flow of energy or Qi. This causes the tension and worry associated with anxiety and eventually the physical symptoms. Acupuncture is able to free these blockages and allow Qi to flow freely. Acupuncture is a very calming experience that relaxes the muscles, releases endorphins and helps to detoxify the body from waste chemicals such as Cortisol.

At Old Bridge Spine and Wellness, our licensed acupuncturist will ease the negative physical and emotional symptoms associated with your anxiety so you can better enjoy the world around you.

OBESITY

Obesity is at an all-time high worldwide. Obesity is determined by using weight and height to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI). For an adult, a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight. A BMI over 30 is considered obese. This means that for a person who is 5’7” a weight of 121 to 158lbs is considered normal, 159 to 190lbs is overweight and 191 to 249lbs is considered obese.

Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gallstones, and reproductive problems.

While bariatric surgery may seem like an easy way to solve obesity, it is not without risks. 10-20% of patients require follow up surgery to correct complications. More than 33% of patients develop gallstones. Almost 30% of patients develop nutritional deficiencies. After surgery, patients require close monitoring and lifelong use of special foods and medications. *

This is why weight loss is best done as a part of a gradual and natural process. In addition to using acupuncture to stem your food cravings, our experienced acupuncturist can help you adjust your diet to work with your body. By doing an extensive intake and understanding your body they are able to tailor food around a Chinese medicine nutritional perspective to help you know which foods to add in to your diet and which foods to avoid.
