Massage therapy can provide a wide range of health benefits, including repairing damage to the musculoskeletal system, reducing pain and jumpstarting the healing process. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have questions about massage therapy, how it can benefit you, and what to expect during the process. Here is what you need to know about massage therapy at Old Bridge Spine & Wellness.
What is massage therapy?
Massage therapy is the science and art of moving your soft body tissue through therapeutic strategies. There are different types of massage therapy that can give you different results. For example, deep tissue massage can improve blood flow to your muscles, reduce inflammation, and help reduce pain in key areas.
What can I expect before my massage therapy session?
First, you will be asked to fill out a form detailing your health history and undergo an assessment. During this assessment and testing phase, your Old Bridge Spine & Wellness chiropractor and his medical team will be working to learn where your pain is coming from, what kind of issues are causing it, and detail a treatment process that will work for you. Tests might include range of motion tests or X-rays to peer into your body. Your therapist will also discuss with you any reasons why you shouldn’t undergo a massage, such as if you’re sick with a fever or recently underwent surgery.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
During your massage therapy session, a friendly staff member will direct you to a private space where you can remove as much clothing as you’re comfortable with and provide you with a sheet for privacy.
Your massage therapist will work around clothing if you don’t want to remove your clothing; it’s all about what you want. In most cases, it’s a good idea to remove clothing in the areas you need targeted for the massage, such as your back, wrists and neck. Depending on where you’re being massaged, you’ll be asked to lie on your back or stomach during the massage therapy session.
Where will I be massaged?
For a full body massage, your back, neck, arms, legs, feet, hands, and shoulders will be massaged. However, your massage therapist will likely focus on key areas if you are experiencing specific pain, sore spots, or health conditions.
Is the massage therapy painful?
Massage therapy may involve a certain amount of pressure but most people thoroughly enjoy their massage. If a specific area hurts, it may be a sign that your therapist needs to work through it to reduce the pain in the long-term. As always, you should make it clear if you’re uncomfortable with a certain level of pressure.
How often should I receive massage therapy?
If you are experiencing a specific problem or condition, you likely need massage therapy at least once a week. However, your chiropractor will work with you to decide what course of treatment works best. For general preventative care, massage therapy once a month should help you relieve muscle tension and reduce stress. In some cases, massage therapy will be paired with other treatments to accelerate your healing and restore well-being.
