Concussion Evaluation for Old Bridge, Freehold and Matawan
As you may have heard from today's headlines, concussions have become an increasingly worrying problem in our society. While concussions may occur as the result of auto accident injuries, personal injuries or workplace injuries, they are especially common among athletes involved in contact sports. Even after a player is taken out of the game to recuperate, it can be difficult to gauge the success of the treatment. This means that many individuals may resume high-risk activities too soon in the recovery process, making themselves vulnerable to increasingly dangerous recurrences. We want to be part of the solution to this problem -- and that's why we now offer ImPACT concussion injury testing to our patients.
ImPACT is a state-of-the-art computerized testing platform for evaluating and monitoring concussion injury symptoms throughout the recovery process. It doesn't actually diagnose the problem -- that's a job for a skilled medical professional, not a device. But it does collect a patient's reported symptoms and medical history, run the patient through a series of tests, and then display the results, giving the patient and physician a detailed picture of whatever impairment that may have been caused. By comparing two or more tests over time, it's possible to monitor the healing journey and produce a confident estimate as to when normal activity can be resumed.
Inside an ImPACT Concussion Injury Evaluation
What should you expect when you undergo our concussion injury testing? The test itself only takes about 25 minutes from start to finish, and you'll be interacting with a computer interface throughout. The test begins by having you enter some basic information about yourself, including your history of injury and any previously-diagnosed learning disabilities. The next section asks you to report your symptoms, along with any medications you're currently taking and recent sleep quality. (A 7-point scale is used to rate your symptom severity.) The third step presents a series of neurocognitive tests. These tests evaluate mental functions such as word and design memory, visual processing, symbol matching and color matching. The final step is the calculation of your test scores, reported symptoms and other data, displayed as a series of graphic charts.
We're very excited to provide ImPACT concussion injury testing for athletes of all ages, as well as anyone else who has been diagnosed. High-risk athletes may even want to have a test performed while they're still in good health, just to have a baseline on file for comparison in case a concussion occurs. Our team at Old Bridge Spine and Wellness Center can then email the test results to your primary physician or neurologist, working closely with these specialists as you undergo treatment.
